Genesis 22:8-"Abraham answered, 'God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.' And the two of them went on together."
This story of Abraham and Isaac is one of my favorite stories of the Old Testament. It reveals to me the amount of faith Abraham had in following God. It shows an incredible amount of trust Abraham had in God. It demontrates Abraham's willingness to obey God even when God's request did not make sense.
Isaac was Abraham's son of promise. He was the son God would give to both Abraham and Sarah. (Genesis 18: 10) God promised Abraham He would do the impossible. God was going to give Sarah a son even when she was old and well past the age of child-bearing. (Genesis 18:11) What a miracle!
I can't imagine the joy Abraham and Sarah experienced when the day finally came and Isaac was born. (Genesis 21:1-2). Here was a couple, well advanced in years, having their first child together. Isaac brought so much joy and laughter to this faithful couple. They now realised the God they served was faithful to fulfill the promises He made to Abraham. The promise of Abraham being the father of many nations. (Genesis 15:5)
In Genesis 22:2 Abraham received a word from the Lord that shocked him to the core. The Lord told Abraham to take the son of promise and sacrifice him. Can you comprehend what Abraham must have thought? Take this son, the son God miraculously gave them and kill him. What was God thinking? How could He ask Abraham to do such a thing? What would Abraham do in this moment of crisis?
Abraham obeyed. Abraham didn't hesitate or argue with the Lord. He obeyed. Genesis 22:3 says, "Early the next morning Abraham got up and saddled his donkey." The command of the Lord was immediately carried out. Abraham possibly did not understand what the Lord was doing but he knew he could trust the Lord with his life and the life of his son.
Has God ever asked you to do something that did not make sense at the time? Have you ever felt the promise of God would never happen only to find when it does God commands you do something that does not make a lick of sense? The greatest challenge in our walk with the Lord is obedience that requires fully trusting in God.
The thing we have to remember is God will always provide what we need to accomplish His purposes. I love the faith Abraham had in God when Isaac asked him about the lamb to be sacrificed. Genesis 22:8 is Abraham's response, "God himself will provide the lamb." Thankfully, for Abraham and Isaac God did provide. The sacrifice was offerred and Abraham and Isaac returned home together.
Today we face a similar circumstance. We needed a lamb to be sacrificed for us. We needed God to provide a lamb to be sacrificed for our sins. We would be destroyed, seperated from God, if He did not provide the lamb. God came through for Abraham and He also came through for us in providing the spotless lamb, Jesus Christ, His one and only Son.
Have you accepted God's Son as the sacrifice for your sins? Have you trusted God with your life? If your answer to these questions is "No", then make today the day you accept God's give and receive eternal life through His Son.
Prayer-Dear Lord, Help me to trust you with my life like Abraham did with his. I ask that you would forgive me of my sins. I believe in Jesus, the lamb you provided to restore me into the person you called me to be. Help me trust and obey your word as I commit my life to you today. In Jesus Name, Amen!
