"And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, 'Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord."
Shepherds? The first announcement of the birth of the Savior was given to shepherds? Why would God announce the birth of Immanual to lowly shepherds? You would think it would be announced to the religious leaders or kings, not shepherds, right?
I believe the announcement to the shepherds of Jesus' birth was intentional. God was making a statement that His Son's arrival was for all mankind, including the lowly shepherds. Jesus said in Matthew 9:13b, "For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners." He came for me and for you.
The shepherds were just common ordinary men. No outstanding credentials. No high society families. No claim to fame. Just men doing a menial job living their lives the best they could. They were given this message based on grace and not on societal merit. They were just as surprised by the angel as I am reading about the encounter today.
I am surprised that several years ago the Holy Spirit came and revealed to me that a savior was born to take away my sins. He came announcing to me, a sinner, to come and see Jesus. It was only by God's grace that I heard the message that changed my life forever. Immanuel is with us and that is something to celebrate this Christmas season.
Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for your grace and love that is evident in the surprising visit of the angel to these shepherds. Salvation is for everyone. Immanuel was with those in Bethlehem and is also with us today. May we always be surprised by the miracle of Christmas. In your name, Amen!
